A dad dressed up as a "Plague Doctor" was wrestled to the ground by security staff before being kicked out of a popular family day party in Grimsby.

Lee Westerman dressed up in the Steampunk outfit for the party to celebrate the end of the Dong Energy 10k in People’s Park, Grimsby.

There were hundreds watching on as the 3,000 runners crossed the finishing line in the park where there were a number of charity stalls, games and local theatre performances.

The first cases of bubonic plague, or Black Death were discovered in the 14th century and it is the most devastating pandemic in the history of humanity, which affected the whole of Europe killing 60% of Europeans, died 50 million people of a total of 80 million inhabitants, according to data from researcher Diane Zahler. The plague also affected Eastern countries, but did not reach the American or African continents.

Bubonic plague was discovered in 1320 in the Gobi Desert. In 1331 the plague reached to China, in 1338 to Russia, in 1342 to India, and finally in 1346 reached to the European continent, no one could stop it.

The fourteenth century had devastating moments because of the plague. In sieges infected corpses were thrown into the city with catapults. Fishing and commercial boats remained directionless with all the dead crew. Entire villages were deserted when all its inhabitants died. The economy practically disappeared and social chaos was present. In the beginning it was thought that the Jewish community were the cause of this new disease, so many civilians began Jewish pogroms.

Using this method is really simple, but the mask looks really good. I couldn't find any help on the internet when I was researching how to make one. I had the idea that I wanted my children to have a hands-on activity and then write a set of instructions from it. So, I set about making my own mask and here are the instructions of how to do it.

The next instructions would be to decorate it or to write instructions on how they made it, depending on what you wanted from the lesson.

Please take a look at the display we created using them to see what they look like. The display has now been taken down and the instructions were done using smart notebook which I cannot open with this laptop. I will try and get more pictures of the results when I get my school computer back.

It was worth it. I glued the pattern to the leather with rubber cement. It held just long enough to cut out the pattern. Then I used some leather tools to punch the holes to sew things together. Because nothing looks as creepy as sewn skins.

For the eyes, I cut out the circles and stitched them to the mask. The lenses were from a cheap pair of sunglasses that I got at a wedding.

The sunglasses lasted longer than the marriage. Using a belt sander, I shaped them to fit inside the circle and then sewed the circle shut. (more creepiness.)
